Magnificent 30ft sperm whale DIES in Norfolk despite emotional rescue attempts

DESPERATE efforts to save a huge sperm whale stranded near a popular holiday beach floundered after its life ebbed away with the tide.

The sight of the 40ft creature’s body emerging in the dawn light today was an emotional reminder for the rescue team that had endeavoured long into the night to rescue the stricken whale.
Experts from British Divers Marine Rescue, RNLI lifeboatmen, police and the coast guard were all involved in trying to save the whale after it became stranded in tidal waters near Hunstanton, Norfolk.
The sperm whale – the same type of creature that gave rise to the legend of Moby-Dick – had been left thrashing in the rocky shallows after coming too close to shore with four other members of its pod.

As its strength retreated with the receding seas, the whale, blooded and scarred by its exertions, died late into the night.
The other four whales managed to make their way into deeper water and escaped the same fate.
The remaining one was thrashing around and in distress

An RNLI hovercraft was launched during the rescue mission to assess the whale’s condition and also the depth of the shallow waters.
Eyewitness Gary Pearson, from nearby Dersingham, described the scene to the local BBC News.
